Like many others, reader R.C. is confused about VPN and the iPod touch. He writes:
I need VPN for work, but don’t see it on my iPod touch. How can I make it work, and how are configurations edited?
You can’t. VPN is not found on the iPod touch—at least not on any I’ve encountered in the U.S. running software version 1.1.1. But I don’t blame you for being confused.
If you travel to the iPod touch support page on Apple’s Australian site, you’ll find a Setting up VPN link in the How-To section. (And if you don’t see it by the time you read this, hurrah , someone at Apple reads this stuff!) Click this link and you’ll find details on how to configure VPN on an iPhone .
Move to the same page on the U.S. site, however, and you’ll find no mention of VPN.
More confusing still are claims by some that they do have VPN on their iPod touch—found by following this path: Settings/General/Network. Problem is, there’s no Network entry in my iPod touch’s General setting, as there is on my iPhone.
So, time to clear up the mystery. Is VPN on the iPod touch simply a feature that Apple hoped to have but stripped out at the last minute (and some have reported as existing without actually checking to see that it does) or are there truly iPod touches in the wild that have this feature? And, if the latter is true and you have one, please use the comments link below to tell us what makes your touch so special.
