WiebeTech on Monday introduced a new device that enables users to erase a hard drive securely without having to tie up a host computer. The Drive eRazer is priced starting $99.95.
The Drive eRazer erases data more quickly than a software-based drive erasing tool — it can blank a disk at 35MB/sec. It erases by zeroing it every bit of data on the drive, deleting block that include partitions and Host Protected Areas. It also verifies the disk.
A $149.95 Pro model is available that can also delete areas normally invisible to operating systems, automatically checks for and removes DCOs and writes to every sector of the disk using different data each pass. Verification is then done on the last pass. WiebeTech makes the Pro version in three different forms: One for 2.5-inch (laptop) disks, one for 3.5-inch (desktop) disks, and one that can work with either, and can also work with drives that use Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces for $199.95.
WiebeTech says that the Drive eRazer is compliant with Department of Defense (DoD) requirements for deleting hard drive data.
