Friday, Nov. 16, 2007 marks the one-year anniversary of the release of the PlayStation 3 video game console, according to Sony. While the company continues to forge ahead with support for its older PlayStation 2 console and recently refreshed its PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld system, the PlayStation 3 is the flagship in the company gaming line.
Sony noted that more than 200 titles have been release for PS3 since it launched. The game system also spawned a companion online service called the PlayStation Network (PSN), where players can download demos, full games and add-on content to games they already own. PSN has generated more than 60 million pieces of content that have been downloaded from PS3 users worldwide, according to Sony.
Sony recently introduced a new PS3 model to the U.S. market priced at $399, and Sony said that sales have taken off a result — a 192 percent increase at the top 10 retailers in North America. The company has timed a new advertising campaign in time for the holidays, to sell consumers on the benefits of the PS3, including its Blu-ray Disc movie playback capabilities.
