Spiderweb Software has released Avernum 5, a new fantasy role playing game (RPG) for the Macintosh. Avernum 5 costs $28; a downloadable demo is available. The Windows version won’t be released until early 2008.
Avernum 5 is the latest in Spiderweb’s long-running series of fantasy RPGs set in an enormous underground world populated by monsters, magic-wielding humans and other creatures.
In Avernum 5, you must search for a rebel villain named Dorikas — an assassin who’s tried to kill the Empress of the Empire. As a soldier, it’s your job to go after Dorikas as he goes to the underground world of Avernum to evade capture.
The game features hundreds of quests, dozens of dungeons and enemy fortresses to explore, and multitude of non-player characters (NPCs) to interact with. The game system features more than 50 spells and battle disciplines to master, character building options and secret skills to unlock. Avernum 5, while a new game set in the Avernum universe, doesn’t require any familiarity with the older games in order to play.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later, 50MB RAM, 200MB hard disk space, 1024 x 768 display with 16-bit color. The game runs on Intel-based Macs, as well.
