MCE Technologies has introduced its 320GB MobileStor Performance hard disk drive upgrade for MacBook and MacBook Pro. It costs $349.
2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives able to fit inside MacBooks and MacBook Pros are commodity components that can be purchased anywhere, but MCE has included with its kit an external, portable enclosure that has both USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces on it along with installation instructions and a toolkit to open up the laptop. That, and a copy of Shirt Pocket’s SuperDuper cloning/backup software, make it easy to transfer data from your full internal hard disk drive to the new 320GB mechanism. Then, once you’re done, simply put the original drive in the external enclosure, and you’ll have a backup or supplemental external drive as well.
The 320GB mechanism MCE sells operates at 5400RPM and features a maximum sustained transfer rate of more than 75MB/sec, with burst transfer rates of up to 150MB/sec. The drive supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and S.M.A.R.T. status monitoring, supported by Apple’s Disk Utility, which can warn you if the drive is experiencing problems that can lead to disk failure.
