Eye-Fi on Thursday announced the pending release of a new “Smart Boost” update for its Eye-Fi card — an SD-form factor card for digital cameras that enables them to transfer digital pictures wirelessly over a Wi-Fi network. The update will be free for current Eye-Fi owners when it’s released on February 12, 2008.
With an Eye-Fi card equipped, a digital cameras can send files over a Wi-Fi network to a nearby Mac or PC or to a photo sharing Web site on the Internet. It saves you from having to tether your digital camera to your Mac before you can download and manipulate files. It has 2GB of built-in memory, as well.
The Smart Boost upgrade will enable the card to determine the most efficient way to send photos. If the computer is on, the Eye-Fi Card will direct photo transfers to it, to enable the Eye-Fi Manager software on the computer to manage any transactions to the Web. When the computer is turned off, the Eye-Fi Card will automatically send photos to the Web-based Eye-Fi Service, which can then deliver photos to photo sharing sites and syncs back with the computer once it’s turned on again.
