Officials in the Japanese government have confirmed an investigation has been launched into why an iPod nano began sparking while it was being recharged, according to an Associated Press report.
The incident happened in Kanagawa Prefecture, located southwest of Tokyo, the official said. No injuries were reported. The government suspects a defect in the iPod’s lithium-ion battery is to blame.
For its part, Apple Japan did not take issue with the government’s statement, although an Apple spokesperson said it was unclear whether the iPod had been sold in other countries.
The Japanese government has asked Apple to investigate the incident and report back to them.
The iPod has been one of Apple’s top selling devices since its introduction in 2001. The company sold 22.1 million iPods during the fiscal first quarter of 2008.
