Clear Channel Radio, the largest radio broadcaster in the United States,
is now tagging tracks played on its digital radio stations to help listeners buy music through iTunes. The company is leveraging HD radio technology to provide the new service.
Chear Channel said that it has implemented tagging on more than 340 of its HD Radio stations. HD Radio works in conjunction with a special receiver and makes it possible for you to “tag” music you’re listening to by pressing a button when you hear a song you like. An attached iPod records the information on the songs you’ve tagged. The next time you synchronize that iPod to iTunes, the selected songs are displayed on a list that you can then purchase through the iTunes Store.
The technology works over FM radio and HD2 multicast radio channels. HD Radio’s developer, iBiquity claims that the technology offers CD quality audio over FM frequencies, without any static, his, pops and fades. iBiquity
indicated in January that Clear Channel and its competitor CBS Radio were implementing tagging in their broadcasts. HD Radio receivers include products made by Alpine, JBL, JVC, Polk Audio and Sony.
