Western Digital (WD) on Monday announced that it’s shipping its new line of Scorpio Black 2.5-inch hard disk drives for notebook systems. The Scorpio Black—compatible with Mac and PC laptops—comes in capacities up to 320GB.
The Scorpio Black operates at 7200RPM. It connects to the laptop computer using a Serial ATA (SATA) interface and a 16MB cache. Features of the drive include IntelliSeek—WD’s seek speed optimization technology that helps lower power consumption, noise and vibration; ShockGuard, which helps protect the drive against shocks from daily use; Free-fall Sensor, which detects if the drive is being dropped and helps park the heads off the disks to prevent damage; and WhisperDrive, which WD claims reduces noise.
The Scorpio Black drive comes in 80, 120, 160, 250 and 320GB capacities, and carries a suggested retail price of up to $249 depending on capacity and features. The SATA interface makes it compatible with MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
