SoftRAID has announced the release of an update to its eponymous RAID software for Mac OS X, SoftRAID. The new 3.6.7 update is a free upgrade for all 3.x users; SoftRAID costs $129 to download ($149 on CD).
SoftRAID enables users to create software-based RAID arrays using two or more hard drives, either in mirrored (RAID 1) or striped (RAID 0) configurations. Apple’s Disk Utility software, included with the Mac, also lets you set up a basic RAID array, but SoftRAID’s makers claim their software is better as it reports on the status of your volumes, can combine volume types on a disk and change volume configurations and more.
SoftRAID 3.6.7 introduces a new driver mechanism that stores two copies of the RAID header information for each volume. This way, if the RAID header gets corrupted, the driver can use the backup copy to mount the volume. Also new in this release are several fixes for Leopard-related problems.
SoftRAID 3.6.7 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
