Electronic Arts and Maxis have announced that Spore, the long-awaited game from The Sims and SimCity creator Will Wright, has gone gold master. The game has been developed for Mac OS X and Windows and will hit store shelves on September 7, 2008.
Spore is billed as “your own personal universe in a box.” You evolve life from a single-cell animal all the way up to an intelligent life form, establish tribes, build civilizations and construct a world—then go out and explore a universe populated by the creatures created by other gamers.
The game features creative tools that let you craft your own creatures, vehicles, buildings and spaceships—in fact, earlier this year, EA released Spore Creature Creator, a software toy based on those tools.
Spore is coming in two versions—a $49.99 standard release and a $79.99 “Galactic Edition” that includes a “Making of Spore” DVD, a National Geographic documentary DVD, “The Art of Spore” hardback book, an exclusive Spore poster and a 100-page Galactic Handbook.
Unlike EA’s 2007 Macintosh game releases, the Mac and PC versions are shipping together in the same box. Like those previous releases, Spore was developed for the Mac by TransGaming using their Cider translation layer technology. Spore requires a Mac with an Intel processor (GMA 950 graphics in older Intel MacBooks, Mac minis and some iMacs are not supported).
