Game publisher Aspyr Media has launched GameAgent, its long-promised online download store. You can purchase and download Aspyr titles through GameAgent rather than having to go to a store and buy a game in a box.
GameAgent is taking baby steps at first—the service launches with two Mac games available for purchase and download, futureU, Aspyr’s recently release SAT prep game, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat, the first person shooter. But other titles are also planned for distribution through the service, and Aspyr is also making GameAgent available to PC gamers.
GameAgent enables you to play games without having the CD or DVD in your Mac’s optical drive, because the games you purchase are “locked” to your computer. You can also use the service to register your Aspyr games online, get information about new updates to the games you own, get alerts about Aspyr games currently in development and the company’s new releases, and, occasionally, take advantage of special offers.
Aspyr is also introducing an “Extended Download Service.” The service, which incurs a $4.99 per game fee—lets you download your purchase again for up to two years. Aspyr calls the service “an insurance policy” in the even something goes wrong with your computer or the downloaded game.
