Ankama Games on Tuesday announced that Dofus, its massively multiplayer online role playing game for Mac and PC, has reached 10 million players worldwide. Of them, 1.5 million are subscribers.
Dofus claims to be the first MMORPG created using Adobe Flash technology. The game, set in a fantasy realm, features anime and manga-inspired graphics and uses tactical gameplay elements. It’s playable on Mac OS X, Linux and Windows PCs.
As an online RPG, Dofus has you create a character using one of almost a dozen different character classes. Once you learn the basic mechanics of the game, you go out in the world and interact with other players and non-player characters; all the graphics are rendered in a three-quarter (or isometric) perspective, similar to Diablo and other games of that ilk. Players can specialize in various professions as a way of garnering the currency you use in the game to acquire new items.
While some online RPGs use real-time combat, everything in Dofus is turn-based, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, for example. Players expend “movement points” and “action points” with each turn.
The game was developed by a French game maker so it’s very popular in France, but Dofus is today played in 150 countries and will soon be available in 10 languages (it’s already available in French, English, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese).
Dofus doesn’t cost anything to play, but subscribing — which starts at $6.90 per month — enables you to explore the entire world, participate in player-run guilds, do Player Vs. Player (PVP) combat and more.
