Active Storage on Monday introduced its Active Storage XRAID, a 16 terabyte RAID system for Macintosh users that occupies three units of rack space. It costs $14,999.
The Active Storage XRAID features 16 hard disk drive bays, with support for SATA II and 3Gb/s SAS hard drives. Using a Linux RAID kernel, the system provides dual 4 Gb/s Fibre host ports per RAID controller, and features redundant cooling and power supplies. It works with Apple Xsan and includes Mac OS X-native storage management software.
Active Storage offers the XRAID in two configurations: A $10,999 configuration includes 6TB and is expandable to 12TB in a secondary enclosure. Each enclosure contains a 750GB hard drive each equipped with 16MB cache. A $14,999 configuration has 16TB and can be expanded to 32TB by adding a secondary enclosure; each drive mechanism is 1TB equipped with 32MB cache.
