Electronic Arts’ “Madden NFL 09” was the best-selling console game in the third quarter in the world’s top three gaming markets, according to data from Japan’s Enterbrain.
The title sold just under 3 million copies between July and September to easily beat second-placed “Wii Fit,” which sold a little under 2.1 million copies, said Enterbrain.
The ranking is compiled from Enterbrain’s own point-of-sales data from Japan and similar data from NPD Group in the U.S. and GfK Chart-Track in the U.K.
But whereas Nintendo’s Wii Fit sold well in all three regions the success of Madden was due almost solely to sales in the U.S. The game sold just 1,000 copies in Japan and 35,000 copies in the U.K.
In third place was “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” from Lucas Arts with sales of 1.74 million copies and in fourth place, based solely on Japanese sales, was Nintendo’s “Pocket Monsters Platinum” with sales of 1.48 million copies. The game was not available in the U.S. or U.K. during the period.
