7digital, a site offering MP3 tracks, music videos, films, and audiobooks, has teamed up with Songbird, an application for organizing your music collection, to provide a download store.
Songbird is a free, open-source iTunes replacement designed to help listeners use their existing collections to discover and acquire new music. And now, Songbird users in Europe and the United States can purchase, download, and transfer music from 7digital.com 6-million-plus song catalog in 320kbps MP3 format.
Once installed as an add-on, users can click on the 7digital Music Store link in Songbird’s left-hand menu to access the store and purchase tracks, without ever leaving the Songbird application. When you download a track or album is from 7digital within Songbird, it is downloaded and added to your Songbird library.
The 7digital store can also make music recommendations based on your most recently played songs in Songbird.
Pricing will be based on geographical location and will correspond to pricing on the local 7digital Web site. A portion of the revenue generated from tracks purchased via 7digital will go towards further developing Songbird.
The Mac version of Songbird requires an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 (the software also runs on Windows and Linux).
The 7digital and Songbird integrated service is available now for direct purchase of MP3s in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United States.
