A Washington state television station, KNDO/KNDU Tri-Cities, recently reported on one sheriff’s deputy, Doug Hollenbeck, who has been using his iPhone as a type of pocket translator. Hollenbeck, who serves a community in southeastern Washington, has been using his iPhone over the last eight months to help augment his own non-fluent Spanish skills.
We’ve previously seen iPods being used in this way by American military overseas, but this is the first that we can recall of the iPhone, or any type of this sort of software, being used by domestic law enforcement in the U.S.
Unfortunately, there’s no word as to which application he’s actually using—nor how specifically the iPhone is helping him, although one comment over at Cult of Mac suggests that Collins Pro Spanish-English Translation Dictionary (iTunes link) might be up to the job.
