Update: The problem turned out to be with MobileMe and has since apparently been fixed. Since this problem occurred for me only after applying the 3.0.1 update for iWeb and since there wasn’t any problem with any of my other MobileMe services, I assumed that the problem had to do with the iWeb update. Sorry for the mixup.
Although the addition of new features through minor software updates is always welcome, it’s annoying when those updates instead break existing functionality. To wit, the latest update to iWeb, which bumped it to version 3.0.1, has introduced a bug that has made it a tedious task for me to make any changes to my blog.
In previous versions of the software, you could quickly edit an existing blog entry and republish your website and iWeb would only re-upload those pages where you’d made changes. It was so quick and painless, in fact, that I frequently went back and fixed errors that I hadn’t detected in my entries before publishing.
However, in the latest version of iWeb it’s no longer feasible to do that, because every time you hit the Publish Site button it republishes your entire website. Not only does this make the process consume far more bandwidth, it also ends up taking a lot of time: it used to take me about half a minute to publish a new post on my blog; now it takes me anywhere between half-an-hour and forty-five minutes (and it sometimes fails, which necessitates repeating the whole excruciating process again).
As someone who depends exclusively on iWeb for publishing to his blog, I’m miffed by this break in functionality. Hopefully, someone at Apple will take note of the issue and we’ll see a patch promptly. Until then, I guess I’ll just have to be a little more careful about proofreading my posts before I hit that publish button.
