Other World Computing (OWC) on Thursday announced new Mercury internal SuperDrives for Apple’s “non-Unibody” 13-inch MacBook and 15-inch MacBook Pro. Kits are available starting at $148.
The new SuperDrives are replacements for the stock models included in those laptops. They offer faster burn speeds than the factory models, according to OWC—up to 8X DVD, 6X DVD-DL, 5X DVD-RAM, and 24X CD burn speeds. The drives support DVD+/-R/RW. DVD+/-R DL (Dual-Layer), DVD-RAM and CD-R/RW media. They’re fully compatible with Apple built-in and third-party DVD and CD authoring tools including Apple’s Disc Burning software, iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, Retrospect Express, DragonBurn, Roxio Toast and more.
The $148 kit includes the internal drive alone, with installation instructions. A $160 “Value Bundle” adds 10 pieces of 8x DVD-R media in jewel cases, Prosoft Data Backup 3 software and NTI DragonBurn CD and DVD authoring software.
