Unity Technologies has announced the release of Unity iPhone 1.0.2, a new version of their game development engine for the iPhone and iPod touch. A free update for registered users, Unity iPhone is available as an add-on for the Unity development engine; it’s priced at $399 and $1499 for Basic and Advanced versions, respectively.
Unity iPhone features C# and JavaScript compilation, high-performance 3D mesh rendering, occlusion culling, shader emulation, PVRTC texture compression and other features. It’s designed to help developers already working with Unity to create projects that will run on the iPhone and iPod touch as well.
Changes to the 1.0.2 release include player size and speed improvements. Texture memory, mono runtime and uncompressed audio runtime size has been reduced by up to 50 percent; script calls have also been optimized, so they take less memory. New and improved splash screens are available; a number of bug fixes have been made; and new scripting reference code examples have been added for iPhone-specific APIs.
