OWC has announced a new line of portable hard drives. The new Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini line features aluminum cases, bus powered drives, and quad interfaces.
The Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini case design is a smaller version of the case used in OWC’s Mercury Elite-Al Pro line, so it’s a familiar design to OWC customers. The Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini case measures 3.8 by 5.5 by 1.1 inches, small enough to stash in a laptop bag or backpack.
All Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini drives come with an eSATA port, a USB 2.0 port, and a pair of FireWire 800 ports. If you want to connect via FireWire 400, you’ll need a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable, which OWC includes with the drive. OWC also includes FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and eSATA cables.
The drive can draw power from FireWire or a powered USB port, allowing you to use those connections to power the drive without a power adapter. The drive does have a power jack, but OWC doesn’t include a power adapter; it must be bought separately.
OWC offers a variety of drive speeds and capacities:
OWC also has a Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini 256MB SSD drive with a 64MB cache for $850.
The Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini is also available without a drive so you can insert your own mechanism. The empty case is available for $90, or $98 with a software bundle. The software bundle includes Intech SpeedTools Utilities, Prosoft Engineering Data Backup, and Carbon Copy Cloner, all for Mac. OWC also includes NovaStor NovaBACKUP for Windows. The software bundle is also included in all the drives with mechanisms listed above.
