As the competition heats up between smartphones, wouldn’t it be nice if we could put aside our differences, stop harping on market share and statistics, and have a little cross-platform fun? Com2us has heard our pleas and created a game that tears down these walls.
The iPhone’s own Homerun Battle 3D (formerly Baseball Slugger) was ported to the Android platform in January, and it just so happens that you can play ball online between Android devices and iPhones or iPod Touches via 3G or Wi-Fi. There are no artificial limitations to be found. It’s the same game on both platforms with the same features at the same price. How nice!
Touch Arcade has posted a video showing off gameplay between an iPhone and a Motorola Droid. To our wonder and delight, it’s pretty smooth. There hasn’t been any official word on whether or not there are any problems with playing the game on lower-powered Android devices, but one report claims that the game runs pretty well on the original G1, albeit only after a fresh restart.
This news bodes well for gaming in the mobile space, especially considering how Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have made it impossible to play games online between users of different video game consoles (or even an Xbox 360 and a Windows PC, Microsoft). Though it does take a great deal of time and effort to get a single game working well across different kinds of smart phones—even more so with cross-platform multiplayer—there’s no doubt that mobile gamers appreciate the hard work.
Homerun Battle 3D costs $5 and requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
