Fujitsu introduces new portable ScanSnap scanner

Looking for a svelte scanner that you can take with you? Fujitsu may have what you’re looking for with the ScanSnap S1300, a stylish device aimed at people who need to scan on the go.

The new scanner is an update to Fuitsu’s ScanSnap 300M ( ). Like its predecessor, the highlight of the S1300 is its diminutive footprint—a mere 11 inches wide by 3 inches deep by 3 inches high; and it weighs three pounds. The scanner starts with the press of one button, and can handle duplexing as well as business cards. Fujitsu says that it speeds along at eight double-sided pages per minute, and holds up to 10 pages in its document holder. And if you have a really long document, the ScanSnap can deal with pages up to 34 inches in length. The S1300 recognizes the size of your document, fixes skew, and automatically deletes blank pages. There are scan modes for color, grayscale, and monochrome.

As it churns through those pages, the scanner can generate the usual PDFs and JPEGs as well as editable Word and Excel files. In the box, you’ll also find Mac software to manage scans and files. To make mobile scanning more convenient, you don’t even have to plug the scanner into an outlet; it can draw power from your computer’s USB port (but you’ll need to have two free ports—one for the scanner’s data and the other for power).

The ScanSnap S1300 is available now for $295. You’ll need a Mac running OS X 10.4 or later. And if you want to see it in action, Fujitsu is demoing the latest ScanSnap this week at Macworld Expo.
