Our Verdict
When we took the Acme Made iPod Wallet out of the box, our first impression was “Wow, that’s kind of bulky.” And compared to the more form-fitting cases on the market, it is. However, after using it for a while, we came to appreciate the Wallet for what it is — a stylish way to carry your iPod and earbuds in a single package. The outside of the Wallet is made of Italian Box leather with a patent finish — it really does look like an Italian patent leather wallet, except that instead of brown or black, the available colors are green and pink. The inside of the case is made of a soft, washable, microsuede lining and includes an elastic band to hold your earbuds, as well a handy slot to hold cash, credit cards, or ID. A nifty magnetic latch keeps the Wallet closed.
In many ways, the Acme Made Wallet is much like the various flip cases we’ve reviewed; the main difference is that instead of the flip cover being vertically aligned, the Wallet is designed more like a, well, wallet — the hinge is on the left. In fact, in some ways, having the case open and close to the side offers benefits. For example, when the case is closed, the remote/headphone jack, the hold switch, and the dock connector are all easily accessible. Of course, this means that the top and bottom edges of the iPod remain exposed, but the Wallet’s edges extend far enough that they’re likely to protect those surfaces from accidental bumps and scratches.
The Wallet comes in two versions: one for standard iPods and one for the iPod mini. Although the standard version includes a custom-fitting sleeve to hold the iPod, the iPod mini version connects to your mini via the mini’s belt clip, which adds to the bulk of the case. This was our least favorite part of the case; on the other hand, it means that you always have your belt clip handy.
Overall, the Acme Made Wallet is a fashionable accessory that also happens to be functional and will surely stand out from the crowd. We just wish it came in a few more colors.–Dan Frakes
