The BoxWave Active Case for the iPod mini is another in the growing number of clear, hard plastic cases that protect your iPod mini against scratches while still letting it look like a mini and without adding too much bulk. The screen is completely protected, as is the entire body of the mini, while the Click Wheel is exposed for easy access. (The controls are therefore vulnerable to scratching, but it’s up to the user if this is concern or not; we don’t generally fault a case for this.) The mini’s dock connector is also exposed to allow you to easily connect Apple’s dock connector cable.
In addition, the top of the Active Case flips open on a hinge — ostensibly to allow you to insert and remove your iPod mini, but the design also provides for greater access to the mini’s top controls, allowing you to use such accessories as Griffin’s iTrip transmitter and MacAlly’s PodWave speakers. We also appreciated this flip-top design for another reason: The thickness of the top of the case makes it a bit tough to access the hold switch — those of us with larger fingers have a hard time — so we find ourselves quickly flipping the top open to turn the hold feature on or off. (We should note that on our sample, the top actually flipped open a bit too easily; on more than one occasion we opened our bag to find that it had opened accidentally.)
The Active Case also provides a lanyard attachment on the left side.–Dan Frakes
