Sumo Flap iPod Cases

We’re fans of Sumo’s standard “sleeve” cases for their build quality, design, and reasonable price, and the company’s Flap cases are similarly impressive. If you tend to use your iPod in situations where you don’t need access to the screen or front controls — or might not have access to the front of the iPod anyway, such as when the iPod is in a pocket or bag — the various Flap cases protect your iPod in a tough, padded sleeve made of ballistic nylon. The inside of each case is lined in soft fabric, and the Flaps stretch to fit any standard iPod.

Like Sumo’s Quilted and Stripe cases, the Flap cases offer protection from scratches and mild bumps. Unlike those cases, which leave the top of your iPod exposed, the appropriately-named Flap models protect even that part of your iPod with a fold-over flap — your iPod is completely enclosed. (The flap on the nylon models is secured with a plastic snap; the leather and suede models use Velcro.) A small opening in the top of the flap accommodates your headphone/remote cable.

A metal belt clip adorns the back of each case; I like the low profile of the clip, which doesn’t add much bulk to the case. (On the leather and suede versions, the clip is covered in leather or suede, respectively.)

The nylon Flap case is available in black or gray; the leather and suede models are available in black. Like Sumo’s Quilted and Stripe cases, the Flap cases are attractive, well-built, and — as iPod cases go — inexpensive. If you like “sleeve” cases, it’s easy to recommend these.–Dan Frakes
