iSkin has been making silicone iPod cases for a long time and it really shows in their latest offering for the iPod video. The eVo3 offers total protection for your player and fits snugly, even around the Click Wheel — as the company’s name implies, the eVo3 effectively acts as a second skin. Two harder pieces of plastic accompany the case, a screen protector and a belt clip. The eVo3 is available in a variety of vibrant colors.
The screen protector, or VISOR, hovers over your iPod’s screen, avoiding the possibility of scratching or distortion. It also extends the length of your iPod, adding extra thickness to the area around the wheel, protecting it from impact. The belt clip rotates, allowing your iPod to be mounted at different angles. The clip can be removed without removing your iPod from the case, but will leave two nubs on the back of the case. (The nubs can be removed if you take your iPod out of the case.)
The eVo3’s silicone is fairly thick but, unlike many “skin” cases, doesn’t interfere with the universal dock: A flap on the bottom provides access to the dock connector. The thickness of this layer offers plenty of shock absorption and protection, but can interfere with use of the hold switch and headphone port. There is an outline around the hold switch, but flipping the switch through it is difficult. Headphones with large plugs will have issues fitting properly and may even come unplugged.
The iSkin eVo3 is a high quality case with little touches that show the company understands how iPods are used. It’s one of the best-designed silicone cases on the market, justifying its somewhat high price of $35.–Derik DeLong
