At first glance iStyles’s Sleeve for iPod might resemble a designer change purse, but this slim pouch (available in sizes for the iPod nano or the iPod video) is made for those who just need a way to protect their iPod from dings and scratches when it’s in a bag or pocket.
Available in a number of different styles, constructed of either microfibers or leather, the iStyles Sleeve has an opening at the top for you to slide your iPod in. It claims that the microfiber on the interior “not only protects the iPod from scratches, but also polishes and cleans the device,” though I saw little evidence for this claim. The material is plush and thick, which at least means the iPod is well-protected and the designs are certainly eye-catching.
That said, I have some gripes with the iStyles Sleeve. First of all, there’s no way to ensure that the iPod stays in the case. Competitors like the Moshi nanoPouch use a drawstring to secure the top; the iStyles Sleeve offers no such functionality. In addition, the case is rather short on extras; it lacks a belt loop or clip, meaning that it’s really only suitable for carrying the iPod in a purse or pocket. However, given that the Sleeve runs for $10, this lack of functionality is not surprising. Of the two complaints, the first is much more worrisome; after all, the pouch can’t protect the iPod if the iPod falls out.–Dan Moren
