Rivet’s GRAB for the 5G iPod (with video) is a case that focuses on attaching your iPod to other things rather than protecting the iPod itself.
The case’s belt clip is one of the best we’ve seen. As a metal peg on the back of the case slides into the clip, a flexible piece of metal is pushed out of the way until the peg passes it. Then the metal piece snaps back into place, preventing the peg from sliding back out; a button on the side of the clip must be pressed to release the peg. A hook attached to the clip’s back is released by pressing two tabs on the sides. Different plates, for things such as belt clips, fabric plates, and adhesive plates, can be used its place.
However, unlike the belt clip, the case itself is lacking. It offers essentially no protection for the front of your iPod: Five “arms” protrude from the back of the player; four of them wrap around your iPod on the sides and bottom while the fifth, on the top, holds it in place. Apart from these arms, the sides, top, and bottom of your iPod are all left unprotected. The inside of the case is lined with felt while the outside is leather.
The GRAB has an innovative clip system, but if protection is something you covet, this may not be the case for you.–Derik DeLong
