Mophie’s Relo Base Case is yet another entry in the seemingly interminable parade of silicone “skin” cases. Fitted for the second-generation (2G) iPod nano, the Relo Base Case offers solid protection for a low price. However, its biggest advantage over similar cases is its integration with the rest of Mophie’s line of accessories.
The Relo Base Case is comprised of two parts: a silicone skin and a hard plastic screen protector. Slide your nano into the case through the open bottom, fit the plastic protector in place over the screen, and you’re left with a very secure iPod. The only openings are a small hole for the hold switch on top and the open bottom; the latter lets you access your iPod’s dock-connector port and headphone jack. Since the bottom of the nano is flush with the bottom of the case, the case lets you use third-party dock-connector accessories and headphones with no problem. You’ll still need to remove the nano from the case in order to dock it, though. The silicone of the Relo Base Case is thick and resilient, and pleasant to the touch. The Click Wheel is protected with a thinner piece of silicone that leaves the controls perfectly useable.
Although the Relo Base Case doesn’t come with any bells or whistles, its main standout feature is that it works with the rest of Mophie’s Relo line of accessories, which include a belt clip, an arm band, an audio splitter, and a wallet/hard case. It’s worth noting, though, that most of those accessories actually come with a Relo Base Case (except the wallet/hard case, which includes a Relo Radura clear case), so there’s little point to buying one separately unless you want a particular color. Still, at $12 a pop, it’s a good option for a basic silicone skin.–Dan Moren
