Eye-Fi introduced its new X2 series of wireless memory cards on Tuesday, which features higher storage capacities and faster wireless speeds. Eye-Fi memory cards have built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows you to wirelessly transfer photos from the card to your computer, or even upload them to online services without the need for card readers or wires.
The newest additions to the line, which already included the Pro X2, are the Connect X2 and Explore X2. All work as regular SDHC cards and come with 802.11n Wi-Fi, Class 6 read/write speeds and the ability to share photos directly on web services like Flickr, Facebook, MobileMe, and Picasa. Connect X2 is priced at $50 and has 4GB of storage capacity, while the Explore X2 and Pro X2 are priced at $100 and $150 respectively, and each come with 8GB of capacity.
The Explore X2 and Pro X2 cards support geotagging of photos, which allows you to sort and map your images later by location. Eye-Fi has now doubled the number of hotspots its customers have free access to, with the addition of AT&T to its list of supported providers, which powers Wi-Fi hotspots at Starbucks outlets nationwide in the United States.
Two features exclusive to the Pro X2 card are the ability to upload RAW images wirelessly to your computer, and ad hoc transfers, which allows you to connect directly to your computer over Wi-Fi even if there is no wireless network in the vicinity. All three cards also have a new feature dubbed Endless Memory Mode. When enabled, it automatically makes room on the memory card by deleting photos that have already been uploaded to your desired location.
The Eye-Fi cards are currently available on the company’s online store and will soon be available on Amazon and in retails stores like Best Buy, Office Depot, and Walmart across the country.
