You don’t need to look at the weather report to know when it’s summer. Just go to Macworld.com: If you see daily reviews of low-cost, high-quality Mac software, you’ll know we’re smack dab in the middle of the Summer of Mac Gems.

Our annual search for worthwhile free and low-cost Mac software is underway—actually, GemFest 2013 began last month. I’m joined on this Macworld Podcast episode by two of the editors responsible for rounding up all these software gems, Dan Frakes and Roman Loyola. They’ll talk about what you can expect from GemFest between now and when it wraps up by the end of September.

Show Notes

You can find every Mac Gem we’ve reviewed as part of GemFest in this handy chart, which we’ll update each time a new Gem review gets posted. During the course of the podcast, Dan and Roman mention a few of their favorites, including:

  • LaunchBar, an old favorite of our editors for launching apps and opening files;
  • Battery Health, a utility for managing your laptop’s battery life;
  • Cloud Mate, an iCloud storage manager; and
  • Glui, a screenshot annotation tool.

We talk about a few other utilities and apps during this podcast—ReadKit, iClouDrive, Command Click Avenger, MacDropAny, and iDraw—but you’ll have to wait for later in the GemFest for those reviews to go live.
