Cisco has released the latest update to its popular Flip family of pocket video cameras: the Flip SlideHD. With video specifications that are the same as the Flip MinoHD—720p video with no image stabilization—the SlideHD’s main new features are increased storage and, as the name implies, a slide-up 3-inch screen.
When the camera’s in record mode and the screen is folded down, it becomes a resistive touchscreen version of the Flip Mino’s button layout, but when you’re ready to review your videos, the screen slides back and pops up for easy viewing. The Flip SlideHD also mercifully features a headphone jack—the first Flip to do so—so you can listen to your videos without annoying everyone around you.
With 16GB of on-board storage, allowing for four hours of record time and 12 hours of compressed video storage, the Flip SlideHD may be a good buy for those in the market for ultra-portable HD video capability. But at $280, it finds itself in the same price territory as compact camcorders that include niceties like image stabilization, which may make it an iffy proposition for some.
