Swedish music service Spotify is going social, by integrating with Facebook to let users more easily share playlists with their friends, the company said on Tuesday.
Spotify offers a free streaming service, and a premium service that users pay for offline access to music. Users who choose the premium service also get access the mobile version of the service, which is available for the iPhone and smartphones running Android and Symbian software.
The latest version of the Spotify client comes with a new music profile that lets users share their music with friends. To do that users can connect to Facebook through Spotify, allowing friends to see their favorite tracks, playlists and albums and also see their friends’ favorites.
Friends who have made their profiles public are listed in a Spotify sidebar called People to the right of the screen.
Other users can be added to the People list by searching for their username directly in the Spotify client’s search field. Yet another way to share one’s profile is to publish a link to it anywhere on the web.
Also, a new inbox folder on the client’s left sidebar lets users send tracks to friends directly within the platform, by dragging and dropping a track to their name in the People sidebar.
Spotify is expanding the amount of music that’s available in the client by letting users import songs stored on their computer, and if the related artist or album is available on Spotify a link is added to let the user access more content.
The new client is now available, but it will take the company a number of days to get it to everyone. The update will happen automatically upon restart so users don’t have to do anything, according to a blog post.
Spotify is available in Finland, France, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the U.K.
