Our Verdict
Thoughtful design plus good construction make the CandyShell one of the nicer iPad shells we’ve seen.
Speck’s CandyShell Case for iPad isn’t just another quick, plastic knockoff. It’s plastic, yes, but it’s also one of the more intelligently designed and nicely constructed iPad shells we’ve seen. On the outside, it’s a rigid plastic shell (in black or very dark purple) that fits over the back of your iPad. Inside that shell, however, is a soft, shock-absorbing rubber lining. Around the case’s outer edge, you’ll find openings for the iPad’s headphone jack and orientation-lock switch, as well as well-made buttons for the iPad’s Sleep/Wake and volume buttons. But the CandyShell’s signature feature is a little flip-out section at the bottom, near the iPad’s dock-connector port. Flip that section open, and you can place your iPad in Apple’s iPad Dock or iPad Keyboard Dock without removing the shell. The CandyShell isn’t the sturdiest case we’ve seen, but it is one of the nicest.
