Dominate the world one city at a time with iConquer 4
By David Dahlquist, Macworld
If you have plans down the line for world conquest, there’s no better time than now to start planning and practicing your strategies to achieve your nefarious vision.
KavaSoft’s iConquer is a turn-based strategy game of world domination that uses high-definition satellite maps of the world as a battlefield—a perfect simulation for the burgeoning world tyrant.
Recently updated to version 4, iConquer now features high definition maps of cities like New York, London, and Paris, as well as new AI computer opponents.
The goal of iConquer is to take over every country on the map and eliminate your opponents. You can play against 11 kinds of computer players, or challenge your friends over a network.
KavaSoft bills iConquer as one of the first games designed specifically for Mac OS X. A quick run-through of the game’s demo reveals crisp graphics and a Mac-like interface.
iConquer 4’s new high- resolution maps of major cities like London, New York, and Paris were crafted from more than 50 megapixels of satellite imagery, according to KavaSoft. These detailed maps allow you to conquer the cities one neighborhood at a time with block-by-block precision.
iConquer’s computer opponents have also been given a makeover in the version 4 update. New artificial intelligence algorithms have been introduced to give the computer players different personalities and temperaments. Axis of Evil and Hermit players are aggressive and cunning, Homeland players are defensive in nature, and Phalanx players ravage the map with a chaotic brand of mayhem.
Other new features of iConquer 4 include a full-screen mode and a heads-up display window that shows off armies, cards, statistics, continents, and messages without obscuring the game map. A new messages window gives you a play-by-play account of all the action in the game.
iConquer runs on Mac OS X 10.5 or higher and costs $35, but you can download a free 10-game trial if you’d like to give the game a test run. Existing players can upgrade from previous versions of iConquer for $15.
