Most emails sent at work are “irrelevant,” a survey for cloud company Salesforce.com,has found.
The survey, carried out by OnePoll discovered that 70 percent of workers were sent irrelevant emails or were copied on emails of no interest.
More than 1,000 workers from a range of UK businesses were questioned for the survey.
In addition, 38 percent of respondents claimed to suffer from information overload at work, a trend that Salesforce.com said is growing.
“The habit of ‘blasting’ out e-mails to a large group of people to ensure that there is no chance of leaving anyone out of a particular message has created a situation where e-mail is now becoming counter-productive,” said Tim Barker, vice-president of EMEA strategy for Salesforce.com.
According to Salesforce.com, the survey also highlighted the consumerisation of corporate IT.
The research found that an increasing number of workers are using social media at work every day (46 percent). This figure increases to 56 percent for workers in their early twenties, two around 67 percent for new entrants to the job market.
Moreover, younger workers appear to use social media for business, as well as social, purposes. Around 75 percent of respondents under 35 said they get some business benefit from information they get through social media, compared to 52 percent for those aged 35 and above.
