Kiwi, the powerful-yet-minimal Twitter client from YourHead Software, has taken flight with… wait, no, that’s not right. Well, it got a huge upgrade to version 2.0 Wednesday morning, gaining a bunch of new features that make Twitter faster and easier to use. And given that the previous version made our GemFest 2010 list, that bodes pretty well for users.
New in Kiwi 2.0 is a tabbed interface, allowing greater flexibility if you manage multiple accounts or check in on other conversations or timelines often. Each account can have its own tab, and viewing a reply chain between multiple users will open a separate tab as well.
Like most modern Web browsers, you can also tear out tabs into their own separate windows (which can each have their own tabs), allowing Kiwi to adjust to your business and personal tweeting needs. You can keep one, tab-less window for your personal account, and a second with tabs for multiple business accounts, search keywords, and specific users to watch.
Kiwi 2 features tighter integration of Twitter profiles. Clicking a user’s icon will display a full-featured profile window with relevant user stats and the ability to follow, unfollow, block, or report spam. Type an at-sign and a letter or two of a user’s name, and Kiwi can quickly auto-complete it and let you get on with crafting your tweet.
Plenty of other additions round out this upgrade, including new, more minimal themes; customizable keyboard shortcuts; and more. These are in addition to Kiwi’s existing core set of features, which include rules that let you filter, mark, or highlight tweets containing specific keywords or tags, unified timelines with tweets, mentions, and direct messages, support for multiple accounts, and support for themes that anyone can build and submit to the Kiwi themes directory.
Finally, YourHead Software adopted a new pricing model for Kiwi 2. You can still buy a license for $10, or the free demo you download can remain free, but ad-supported. Kiwi requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and, of course, a Twitter account.
