MotionX GPS Drive is among the Swiss Army knives of navigation apps, providing a dozen options where other programs might provide one to four. Nonetheless, the developers have kept the program relatively simple to use with some glitches.
The lack of traffic data explains why MotionX is cheaper than both other subscription services we reviewed—GoKivo and AT&T Navigator—both of which integrate congestion and speed information.
The map display, voice navigation, and advance information about directions are superb. A recent upgrade added an option to choose between a very high-quality voice that could only speak names for a subset of locations, but would speak all directional instructions; or a fully computer-generated TTS. A separate download is required for voice data after you install the program and pay for an in-app voice upgrade.
MotionX’s low cost of entry and low price makes it worth trying, but a traffic option is a necessity for a navigation program.
