Incase’s $50 Book Jacket Classic is a simple, faux-leather, hardcover folio for the iPad 2. It’s available only in black, so those looking for colorful options will be disappointed.
The iPad 2 is held in the folio with a Velcro strap and a soft cloth frame, while the case is held closed with a moleskin-esque elastic strap. There are openings in the case for all cameras, ports, and buttons. Unfortunately, the Book Jacket Classic also has openings on all of its corners—exposing the iPad 2 to possible damage if dropped. Yet despite how exposed the iPad 2 seems to be, the folio is surprisingly bulky and heavy.
The folio has two viewing options: open or closed. When you fold the case’s cover all the way back, its rigid spine keeps it propped at a slight angle for typing. The case’s cover can also be used as a stand to prop up the iPad in landscape orientation but, despite the rubber edges, the case easily slides back to flat unless it is propped at an extremely acute angle or held in place by another object. The unique and most attractive part of this case is actually the grey, wavy-patterned, faux-suede backing that the iPad sits in—and therefore hides.
Overall, the Incase Book Jacket Classic meets the basic needs of an iPad case, but it doesn’t provide many of the features users have come to expect from folio cases, such as adjustable viewing angles, good protection, and lightweight design.
