Western Digital announced Thursday that its My Book Studio line of external hard drives for the Mac will now come in an upgraded 3TB model that will retail for $250.
Up until now, the drive had only been available with up to 2TB of hard drive capacity. The company also says it will come in a new aluminum enclosure that will dissipate heat more efficiently than the plastic housing the drive previously came in, keeping the drive cooler during operation.
The drive also comes in capacities of 1TB for $150 or 2TB for $200, with FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectors. The drive also features hardware-based encryption and WD’s SmartWave software.
All the drives will ship with the company’s Caviar Green drives, which consume less power than ordinary drives, and come ready for use on your Mac.
