Apple’s in search of a fresh face to join its executive team, and it could come from anywhere in the world—but it probably won’t be Ukraine’s defense secretary. Plus, Apple finds itself in some lukewarm water for allegations that it used a copyright photo in a commercial. The remainders for Wednesday, August 3, 2011 are innocent of all charges.
Apple Looks Abroad for Stores Chief (The Wall Street Journal)
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal (account required), Apple has retained global recruiting firm Egon Zehnder International to find a replacement for departing retail VP Ron Johnson. Involving an outside partner is unusual for Apple; rumors suggest that the firm may have been picked to help broaden the search to candidates outside the U.S. I’m not sure why it thought that hiring the guy from Ghostbusters would help, but okay.
Exclusive: Apple To Launch iTunes Replay In The Coming Weeks (AppAdvice)
If you think those are clouds on the horizon, you may be right. AppAdvice says it’s confirmed that Apple is launching a re-downloading and “possibly streaming service” dubbed iTunes Replay. The service would reportedly extend what Apple has already done with re-downloading music and TV shows to movies. Time Inc. Doubles Down on Tablets, Promises All Magazines on All Platforms by End of Year (All Things D)
By the end of the year, you should be able to read all publications from Time Inc. on your tablet—as long as it’s an iPad, Android tablet, HP TouchPad, or Barnes & Noble Nook. Sorry, PlayBook user(s).
Copy-And-Paste-ski: Russian Politico Plagiarizes Steve Jobs (iSmashPhone.com)
Apple’s already accusing Samsung of copying its products; now, Steve Jobs may be able to take a personal affront. The Ukrainian Secretary of National Security and Defense, Raisa Bogatyrova gave a speech at Kiev-Mohyla Academy’s graduation ceremony—one that was apparently suspiciously similar to Jobs’s address at Stanford in 2005. I mean, I was willing to let it slide as a coincidence, until she concluded by unveiling a new iPhone.
Apple sued for using copyrighted photo in TV ad (The Loop)
Photographer Taea Thale is suing Apple for using photos she took of the band She and Him in an iPhone commercial. Is it just me or, does it seem like it’s gotten to the point where the only way to avoid infringing on someone else’s intellectual property is to lock yourself in a basement?
Wait, “Method and Apparatus for Sealing A Person or Persons in a Subterranean Room?” Nooooooo.
