Days after Apple named it one of the best photography apps of the year, Halftone has been updated to let users send its images as real-world postcards.
The app from Juicy Bits Software already converts photographs on your iPhone or iPad into images that resemble old comic strips—complete with captions, dialogue balloons, and a range of other effects. The app was updated Saturday, giving users the option to send those comic-style images as postcards to friends and family, with a personalized message inscribed on the back.
In that respect, the updated Halftone app is most similar to the Cards offering that Apple introduced with the launch of iOS 5. There are some differences: Halftone requires only iOS 4.0 or later to be compatible with devices. And sending a card from Halftone costs $2, compared to the $3 price of a missive from Cards.
Halftone partnered with the makers of another card-making app— Sincerely, a holiday-oriented offering—to create the update; you will have to register with that company in order to send the postcard. The Halftone app costs $1.
