It’s the start of a new month, but we end the week as we always do—with a look back at the major Mac and iOS news of the past seven days, courtesy of the Weekly Wrap.
Fools and Trojans
We started April off right with the Macalope’s annual Fools of the Year list, which makes up in hilarity for what the aforementioned fools lack in intellect and common sense.
This week also saw the return of the Flashback Trojan in Java applet form, security updates from Apple to patch it, and a straightforward piece by our resident security expert, Rich Mogull, on what you need to know about the Trojan.
Birthdays, baseball, and contract negotiations
Did you know the iPad turned two years old this week? Senior editor Dan Moren and staff writer Lex Friedman can tell you all about it on the latest Macworld podcast—when they’re not giggling like schoolgirls.
Speaking of important occasions, baseball is back, and if you were wondering how to best track every second of gameplay on your iOS devices, we’ve got your bases covered.
The iPhone may not have had a birthday, but it did get a couple of presents nonetheless: AT&T will now let you unlock your out-of-contract iPhone, and those in Alaska, Kentucky, Wisconson, or Virginia will be able to grab their very own CDMA iPhone 4 or 4S from the state’s regional carrier.
As iOS marketshare continues to grow, Android lurks in the distance. But is it viable to develop for Android first, over iOS? Staff writer Lex Friedman doesn’t think so.
Per usual, we reviewed several iOS apps this week:
- Index Card, an app for organizing your thoughts.
- Monty Python: The Holy Book of Days, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the classic Monty Python film.
- FileMaker Go 12, which also has a Mac counterpart.
- Angry Birds Space, a game about angry birds. In space.
- Marvel AR, which attempts to put you (or at least your surroundings) in a comic book using augmented reality.
Time for Lion learnin’
You can always learn more about Lion, and this week is no different: We brought you tips on how to adjust the Recent Items menu to show what you want, a few shortcuts for Mission Control and the Dashboard, and a video by our own senior editor Christopher Breen on how you can make the most of Mission Control.
Mic those printers
I know I normally don’t think “wow, fascinating” when the topic of printers comes up. But if you spend a lot on ink, this buying guide for printer ink might just be your new best friend. We also reviewed a few printers: the HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451nw, Canon Pixma MG3120, and the Brother MFC-J430w All-in-One Inkjet Printer
Of course, if printers aren’t your thing, we also looked at SGP’s new Klasden backpack, and the Apogee Electronics Mic.
And stay tuned…
The Weekly Wrap may be, well, wrapping up, but there are always things to come—Apple’s upcoming second quarter earnings announcement on April 24, for example. And I’ll bet that if you check back next week, we’ll be sure to have another Wrap for you. In the meantime, why not play some Ticket to Ride on your Mac?
