The days are getting longer, and the weather’s getting warmer. You’re forgiven if you forgot to refresh Macworld.com as obsessively as often. Luckily, the Weekly Wrap, our collection of the best Macworld stories from the week gone by, is here to help you catch up on what you missed.
On the Mac side
Apple released a standalone Flashback removal tool; if you haven’t run Software Update, take a few minutes now and do so. We’d rather you ensure your Mac is clean and protected than that you finish reading the Weekly Wrap. Just promise you’ll come back again later.
In addition to eradicating Flashback, Apple put an end to free trials for iWork and Aperture. But while Apple taketh away, it also giveth, at least if you’re still running Leopardeth: The company is offering Snow Leopard as a free upgrade to MobileMe customers with the aim of getting them signed up for iCloud.
If you’re looking to go from power user to superpower user, don’t miss our tips on unzipping almost any archive file, creating custom HandBrake presets, capturing video from an iOS device, sending video messages with Mail, and bending Spotlight to your will.
Mac software we looked at this week included MacJournal, Lion Designer, LaunchMagic, Artboard, and CleanText.
On the app side
Apple released minor updates to iBooks and Cards; the latter adds templates for sending your mom a greeting for Mother’s Day. Your mom knows you have an iPhone, and she told me to ask you if you could stop playing Draw Something for five minutes to send her a little card, if you’re not too busy, sweetheart. She did change nearly every dirty diaper you ever had.
Unsure about whether you want to stick with Instagram now that it’s part of Facebook? There are other apps for that.
Also this week, we covered a lot of apps for doing stuff to other stuff:
The Night Sky—an app for watching stars; Ban.jo—an app for stalking people (preferably, people you already know); Pocket—an app for reading articles; Fibble—for helping aliens; Draw Something—for drawing things; Byword—for writing in Markdown; and Photo Measures and Measured—for measuring dimensions.
If your iPhone works but won’t take a charge, the triumphant tale of Flex Riedman may help you. If you’re trying to use your iPad more and more like a touchscreen laptop, check out our review of the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover. And if you’d like to print from your iOS device without needing an AirPrint-ready printer, watch our video tutorial for using Printopia.
Elsewhere
Like small square aliens, Apple TVs are invading conference rooms in businesses around the world. And in this week’s podcast, our editors discuss how Apple should improve iTunes and Messages.
