Macworld’s Reading List for Tuesday, April 8, 2014: The Apple-Samsung trial reveals some irate emails from Apple SVP Phil Schiller, the iWatch has another rumored release date, and Apple has released official iOS 7 adoption numbers on its website.
Phil Schiller Exploded On Apple’s Ad Agency In An Email
Thanks to the Apple-Samsung trial, we the users have been learning all sorts of interesting closed door facts about Apple’s higher-ups and advertising partners. A smattering of these fine facts: Steve Jobs and his associates discussed market share and larger iPhone sizes behind closed doors. The folks at Media Arts Lab, Apple’s design agency, don’t seem to like capital letters very much. And if you write to Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, you probably shouldn’t compare the Apple of today with Apple in 1997. Or he gets angry. You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.
Apple Reportedly Targeting Q3 2014 Launch for iWatch
According to MacRumors, Taiwan’s Economic Daily News has been using the Apple supply chain to speculate on a Q3 (or in user-friendly terms, fall 2014) release date for Apple’s rumored iWatch.
Setting aside Apple CEO Tim Cook’s pleas for people to stop reading the supply chain like it were tea leaves, if such a report were true, that means that Apple would be releasing at least five new products in fall 2014: a new iPhone, iPad (and likely iPad mini), iOS, OS X, and the rumored iWatch. I know Christmas is the holy grail for selling tech gadgetry and all, but releasing five major product lines in the same quarter—and that’s not even accounting for any new Macs—sounds like a great way to kill all your engineers. (And, if I might be a little selfish here for a moment: all the tech journalists, too.)
Apple Puts iOS 7 Adoption At 87% As iOS 6 And Older Fade To Black
Apple has released official figures for iOS 7’s adoption rate on its App Store distribution website, as first reported by TechCrunch. Seven months after its release, iOS 7 adoption is up to 87 percent, with 11 percent of users still on iOS 6 and only 2 percent using earlier operating systems. Not reported: the percentage of iOS 7 users who have disabled parts of the operating system’s design via accessibility settings.
The WWDC ticket lottery has closed and been drawn, and lucky recipients across the globe have been waking up to golden ticket emails or sorrowful rejections. (If you’ve received neither but signed up for the lottery, check your spam inbox!) Amidst the many Twitter quips, MarsEdit developer Daniel Jalkut put out a fervent plea to Apple:
It’s in the Mac platform’s interest that
@siracusa attend WWDC. Apple should fly him out as a VIP and celebrate it on stage. Great dev PR.
