There’s Apple stories aplenty on the Internet this Wednesday morning; here are a few we’ve picked out for your reading enjoyment.
Siri-ous Trouble? Hacker Claims to Crack iPhone Lock Screen
Just when you thought it was safe to, uh, use the lock screen again, a “part-time hacker” has found a way to gain access to your iOS contacts without unlocking the phone. The trick? Ask Siri for an ambiguous contact name and you’ll get the option to tap Other…, and see a full list of contacts. Overall Tablet Satisfaction Declines as More Value-Priced Brands Vie for Market Share
Apple remains on top with customer satisfaction ratings for tablets, though overall tablet satisfaction is down this year, according to J.D. Power’s latest surveys. Low price is a major factor in purchase decisions, followed by features and brand reputation, and Apple got top marks in every category, except for price. Which is pretty much what Apple got in J.D. Chart of the day: Apple is No. 2 after Amazon in online retail
Speaking of rankings, a graph from the Wall Street Journal shows that Apple, with revenue of $18.3 billion in 2013, is now the second biggest online retailer after Amazon. The company edged out Staples, but is still far behind the House that Bezos built, which racked up an astounding $67.9 billion. As Fortune’s Philip Elmer-DeWitt notes, much of Apple’s latest bump comes from the addition of hardware sales from its online store, which were not previously accounted for under this heading; Apple also still has an edge in active online accounts, according to analyst Horace Dediu. On the other hand, Cupertino has announced no plans to start delivering things via drone.
Apple appears set to open store inside World Trade Center for 2015 grand opening
To help further bolster that retail number, Apple may have another New York City store in the offing, if recent reports are any indication. The company looks to be angling for a location in the under-construction World Trade Center shopping mall when it launches next year. However, the company has supposedly been frustrated by the construction of the building, which has large columns throughout the underground. Angela Ahrendts, it’s your first project!
