This free iPad app is made for writing and creating, and to connect your words to ideas that support them: The “authoring tool” lets you link to other webpages, yes, but also to other documents—in any number of file formats—and even annotate the documents to which you’re linking. The result? Documents that convey “richer connections” than the same old hyperlinks you’re used to. (The developers explain their product here.)
Veggie lovers will find a lot to like in this $4 iPhone app: It includes 130 recipes from 20 chefs—with new recipes added regularly—that embrace the “whole foods plant-based” lifestyle that can help stave off obesity and diabetes. It features breakfasts, desserts, and everything in between.
Oh, to marry the steampunk aesthetic to the sensibilities of America’s Greatest Living Actor: Put ‘em together and you have Hanx Writer, an app created by Tom Hanks (really!) that mimics the look and sound of a manual typewriter on your iPad—but without surrendering modern luxuries like the Delete key. There are three different types of typewriter available; one comes free with the download. To purchase the others will cost $3 each, or $5 for the bundle. Happy typing!

Here’s the “choose your own adventure” of iPad legal games. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies lets you investigate a crime scene, take testimony in court, and do everything it takes to defend your client: a killer whale. The first episode plays for free; after that Episodes 2-5 cost $5 each to unlock as in-app purchases.
Already a popular offering on Android, Google’s free Photo Sphere Camera app for iPhone is similar in many ways to the panorama function on the iPhone’s native camera app. Two big differences? First, the Google app has a wider range of field—you’ll look up and down, not just side to side. Second, your finished product can be uploaded directly to Google Maps—and thus shared with the entire world in a matter of seconds.
This free iPad app was already a pretty nifty alternative to PowerPoint; version 2.0 launched recently with some even niftier new features, including the ability to set a presentation to autoplay, sharing a presentation as a single webpage, and exporting content as a PDF, JPG, or MP4 video. There are also new templates and a number of user interface improvements.
