Meet the new Macworld staff

Macworld is undergoing a big transformation, converting our print magazine to digital, and introducing new full-time staffers. We’re smaller in ranks, but devoted as ever to covering the most interesting whys, hows and what-ifs of the Apple universe.

Because you saw the keynote, right? This one was a biggie. We’re excited about what lies ahead—from iOS 8 to Apple Pay to that exquisitely machined Digital Crown—and we want to get readers up to speed on what’s happening on our end. We’ve sort of been in the news lately.

If you’re a current print subscriber, look for information about your new subscription options in the November issue of the magazine. We have digital editions for iPad and iPad mini, as well as a host of other platforms. But for now, I’d like to introduce you to the new Macworld staff.

Susie Ochs, executive editor, is in charge of day-to-day Macworld operations. She started covering Apple in 2006 at MacAddict (which later became Mac|Life), where she was lucky enough to attend the unveiling of the first iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air, and other game-changing Apple innovations. During seven years at Mac|Life, Susie’s work covered the full gamut, from how-to articles to features to reviews. And now, after a year at Macworld sister site TechHive, Susie is thrilled to get back on the Apple beat.

Chris Breen, senior editor, has been writing about Apple and its technologies since the latter days of the Reagan administration for such publications as MacUser, MacWEEK, and Macworld. A jack-of-all-Apple-trades, he pens Macworld’s Mac 911 tips and troubleshooting column, and hosts Macworld’s podcast and how-to videos. A born tinkerer, Chris loves nothing better than digging into Apple’s operating systems, and helping those confounded by them.

Leah Yamshon, assistant editor, has been a part of the Macworld family since 2011. She started out covering iOS accessories (So. Many. Cases.) and Mac software, then transitioned to TechHive to spearhead iOS app coverage. Leah will continue to cover all things iOS, from cool apps and tips to trend pieces—perhaps sprinkling in some insight on Apple’s role in fashion and pop culture. She’ll also host Macworld’s weekly app-centric video show, alerting you to apps that are actually worth a spot on your home-screen.

Caitlin McGarry, associate editor, writes about Apple, social networks, and the sharing economy from New York City. Her apartment is littered with so many Apple devices—MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPad Air, two iPhones, and a handful of iPods—you can barely see her furniture. Caitlin has regularly contributed to Apple event coverage for Macworld over the last two years, and is now excited to write about the company full-time.

As for me— Jon Phillips—I’m editor-in-chief of Macworld and its three sister sites, PCWorld, Greenbot, and TechHive. Macworld was the very first magazine I ever subscribed to, and it actually helped inspire my passion for tech journalism. I’m currently platform agnostic (multitasking between an iPad, my Android phone, a MacBook Pro, and desktop PC), but launched Mac|Life magazine and Maclife.com in 2007, and helped cover Apple for Wired when I ran the website’s hardware coverage in 2012. Today I mostly focus on wearables. So, hello, Apple Watch. I’m ready when you are.

This week, the Macworld family lost many key staffers whose passion, creativity and tech knowledge made this website and our magazine an industry flagship. But amid the loss we’re excited about what the future holds. Please stay tuned for great things ahead.
