This free iOS app can stream media from a variety of sources—including Dropbox, Google+, Google Drive, and Instagram—to your television, through any number of web-to-TV devices, including Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast and more. Spend $5 and you can get AllCast Premium to watch add-free and without any caps on video length.
We have a couple of Google entries in this week’s slideshow. Chrome Remote Desktop for iOS does, in fact, let you access your computer desktop remotely from your iPhone or iPad. You’ll have to install the Chrome Remote Desktop app from the Chrome Web Store on the computer you want to access; after that, connecting from your iOS device is relatively easy.
A simple idea: Commit to three tasks each day to complete that day. It has social aspects—the app emails you when friends complete their three tasks for the day. (It’s helpful in team settings, such as when a work group is trying to complete a project.) There’s a free seven-day trial; after that you’ll need to pay $3 a year for full access to all the features.
Version 2.0 of Due has arrived, redesigned to take advantage of the expanded real estate available on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The $5 app reminds you to accomplish tasks, and keeps reminding you until you check it off or postpone the item in question. You have snooze options of 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes.
Here’s another handy iOS app from the Evernote folks. You point your iPhone camera at a document—or business card, or sticky note—capture the image, organize the information, and share it with your colleagues. It’s free to download and use.
A number of workplace communication apps have tried to use Facebook-style interfaces to help colleagues talk to each other. Now the real thing is targeting your office: Facebook at Work lets you see a News Feed that shows the latest news at your company, create and join groups to collaborate with co-workers, and send in-house messages to colleagues.
This app has gotten a lot smarter. New features include “Word Lens,” a feature that lets you point your iPhone to a sign or text and the app instantly translates the text, even without Internet connection. “Camera Mode,” lets you snap a photo, highlight the text, and get a translation. Automatic language detection can “hear” spoken word, determine the language automatically, provide a translation and help you respond quickly and fluidly.
CBS News now features a live-streaming news channel … Skype for iPhone has been updated … Plants vs. Zombies 2 has a number of new levels.
